Percy Wilson, whose family lived in Bishopwearmouth, was commissioned in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion DLI based in Sunderland. He served during the Boer War, as a Lieutenant, in the 3rd Volunteer Service Company attached to the 1st Battalion DLI from April to July 1902.
During WW1, he served as a Major in the 7th and 9th Battalions DLI and commanded the 4th West Riding Regiment on the Western Front. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1918, with 9 DLI, and the French Croix de Guerre in 1919 (both these awards are now lost).
